Rain gutter glossary of terms explained by a Mississauga gutter repair company



This glossary of rain gutter terms is by no means exhaustive, yet a quick introduction to some of the key rain gutter terms. 

1.  Alligatoring - is a condition that happens when the seams in the roof open up or the tar and gravel cracks. The cracking produces a pattern of cracks similar to an alligator's hide.

2.  Drip Edge  a metal flashing or other overhanging component with an outward projecting lower edge, which controls the direction of dripping water.

3. Fascia Board - It is the long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof. The gutter is normally secured to the fascia board.

4. Flashing - a strip of material, typically metal intended to stop water from penetrating two intersecting roofs or wall surfaces. 

5. Gutter - Is the metal channel attached beneath the edge of a roof for carrying rainwater down and away from the house and its foundation. Most gutters consist of gutter sections, drop outlets and downspouts. Gutters can be constructed of aluminum, galvanized steel, vinyl, wood or copper.

6. Gutter ApronA Specialized Drip Edge designed to direct water into the gutter system. Gutter Apron is installed over the roof edge and hangs in the gutter.

7. Ridge Vent - It is a special is a type of vent installed at the top of a sloped roof which allows warm, humid air to escape a building's attic. It sits under the roofing material and is less visible than standard vents. Ridge vents help to prevent ice dams and improper snow melt off.

8. Roofing Felt - It is the protective layer that sits between the roof sheathing and the shingles.

9. Shingles - Rectangular tiles made of asphalt composite, wood, metal, or slate that is laid in overlapping rows to cover the roof or sides of a house or building.

10. Soffits - They are vents that are tucked away under the fascia board. The soffits can be ventilated to allow the flow of air into the roof area.
