Frequently Asked Questions about Rain Gutters
How often do people clean rain gutters?
Ideally, gutters should be thoroughly cleaned twice a year. Once in the start of the fall and again in the start of the spring. At the start of the fall, it is easier to clean the rain gutters when the leaves are still dry. During the spring, it’s best to wait after several dry days to clean the rain gutters. This is an ideal time because that is when the debris and leaves are dry and they are easier to remove.
Why is it important to have rain gutters?
It’s best not to take your gutters for granted. When working properly, your rain gutters and downspout carry rainwater away from your house and help prevent any damage to your house.
When rain gutters are clogged or not functioning properly, the result could wreck havoc to your house. The damage could result in a leaky basement and even foundation problems. In sum, rain gutters protect your home from home and basement flooding.
What type of damage can clogged or malfunctioning rain gutters cause?
Rain gutters clogged with leaves and debris could lead to multitude of problems.
- Clogged or backed up gutters can cause rainwater to back up onto your roof. When this happens, water will pool onto your roof leading to weakened shingles, and causing the fascia and soffit to rot.
- Clogged rain gutters can cause the gutters to sag and over time and the gutters will eventually pull away from your home.
- Overflowing water gutters can also damage the siding and paint on your house, causing unsightly water marks down the side of your house.
- When gutter and downspout are clogged and sagging, the water could damage your roof, damage your gutter boards and cause cracks in your foundation and eventually reach your basement, where it can lead to mold, mildew and even flooding.
What is gutter cleaning?
To clean out your gutters, you will need the following tools: a trowel, ladder, buckets, garden hose, gutter cleaning attachment and gutter sealant.
First, clean the downspout by removing any twigs, leaves and dirt and debris. Flush out any other debris. If the water doesn't drain properly through the downspout, there is probably a clog.
To unclog the gutter spout, insert the end of the plumber's snake in the downspout until it meets resistance. Then to loosen the clog, turn the crank and work it back and forth. Finally, Insert a garden hose in the downspout and turn on the water to flush out any debris.
