Ensure your gutters are flowing properly all year round

Ensure your gutters are flowing properly with the help of these invaluable gutter maintenance tips

Why is your gutter leaking?

It all depends on the circumstances. Sometimes a leaky gutter may need a good cleaning and a coat of sealant applied to the cracks. In other cases, the joint may need to be replaced. In the following videos, different professionals in the roofing industry demonstrate and explain what method is best for a given situation.

In this first video, a professional explains how to repair a leaky gutter

1. Scrape away any debris in the gutter with a flat razor knife.
2. Apply a polyurethane sealant to cover the seam.
3. Then, seal all the joints and any cracks completely and let the sealant dry for a day.

In this second video, a professional explains how to fix a leaky gutter joint

Silicone might not always be the answer. It may fix the gap but it won't stop a gutter joint from leaking in the long run. A leaky gutter joint may be because of grit or debris in the seal or it may be due to a malfunctioning seal.
In some situations where there is a leaky gutter, you may need to take other actions such as replace the seal or fitting.  When you replace a seal or fitting, check to see which company manufactured the product and order a replacement part.

Sometimes instead of buying a replacement seal, you may be able to repair the seal yourself.
1. Repair the gutter seal by cleaning all the dirt and debris from the seal.
2. Then simply click the seal back into place and don't forget to test the seal by running some water through it.

In the third video, a professional demonstrates how to repair a hole in a gutter

If you have a hole in your leaky gutter, it can sometimes be fixed with a simple patch. The professional in this video shows you how to prepare the gutter surface and apply the patch to the hole.
