How to keep your home appliances in good shape
It's impossible to imagine living today without our home appliances.
How can you possibly pass a couple of days without your fridge, washer or stove?
When an appliance stops working, it's not a question of if but how soon you'll pay someone to fix it. Or you may decide to buy a new machine.
Since both fixing and buying can be costly, it's worth knowing what you can do to keep your appliances in good shape. Following are tips that we received from the experts - professionals who make their living fixing appliances at people's homes:
1. Never leave your home without turning them off.
If you read the fine print in many appliance's manuals, you'll see that letting them work unsupervised cancels your warranty. This should give you a clue not to do that (even if you don't have a warranty). If you leave the house while your appliances are working, you will not be able to recognize and deal with issues that may need your attention. You will also put your house in danger, which is another issue.
2. Clean the appliances regularly.
Clogged machines can stop, break, and even start a fire. Adding appliance cleaning to your home cleaning routine will keep them alive much longer! The experts that we interviewed, who have an appliance repair service in Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville and other GTA cities, said that this practice could have save many of their clients from having to fix or buy new appliances.
3. Look around, and inside the appliance.
Just paying attention to your appliances can pay dividends (and save lots of money).
Look around your fridge. Do you see water spilling? Are the hoses all seem to be in their original place? What about the hoses around your washer? Are the machines level? Do the inside surfaces look clean? Without going deep where you shouldn't (if you are not a certified technician), you can "observe a lot just by looking" as the saying goes.
